OpenAI Just Turned ChatGPT Into an App Store Killer

OpenAI's Dev Day may have led with new agentic assistants and fresh AI models, but the bigger story was hiding in the details. Taken together, the announcements point toward a direct challenge to the traditional app store model. ChatGPT, now at 1.2 billion weekly users, is being repositioned as the place where software is discovered, launched, and used — by people and AI agents alike. The company is building the discovery, distribution, identity, and interface layers of a new ecosystem, even if the economic layer is still missing.

ChatGPT Becomes the Discovery Engine

OpenAI is turning ChatGPT itself into a surface for launching apps. The chatbot will begin suggesting apps within the flow of conversation when it recognizes that a particular app could help complete a task. Users can then connect the app and use it directly inside ChatGPT. This is supported by an expanded plugin architecture that now supports extensions, letting developers build interactive panels where users work with tools while chatting. Developers can build AI-native versions of their apps through ChatGPT, the same way they would for the open web or a mobile app store. As more discovery happens through AI chat, this becomes a distribution channel that is hard for developers to pass up.

Identity, Allowance, and the Enterprise Marketplace

Users get a direct incentive to use that channel: 'Sign in with ChatGPT' lets them bring their AI allowance with them into third-party apps. OpenAI has 16 launch partners on this effort, including Cognition's Devin, Notion, Vercel, T3, OpenClaw, and Dactyl, with plans to add more. In demos, OpenAI showed a meeting app working inside ChatGPT, pulling upcoming meetings from a user's calendar and offering AI note-taking and follow-up summaries. Design-focused apps from Figma and Adobe were shown handling project revisions. Apps can also be shared with colleagues through lightweight ChatGPT sites, where coworkers sign in with their own credentials and permissions. OpenAI also announced an enterprise app marketplace with more than 30 launch partners, including Adobe, Figma, Sierra, Decagon, HubSpot, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Harvey, Legora, Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, and Baseten. Eligible customers can apply part of their OpenAI commitment toward approved partner software.

Agents Push Users Away From App-Hunting

OpenAI's embrace of agents is gently pushing users into an era where they think less about which app to use or why, relying instead on AI agent suggestions. The company's autonomous AI agents, known as Dots, will navigate the web and execute tasks in their own cloud infrastructure. Each Dot has its own cloud computer and browser and can use connected apps. Rather than downloading different apps to a computer or phone to manage a project, users tell an agent what they want done, and it does it. The agent may bring a tool or model to the user, reversing the old model where the user sought out the tool. OpenAI says the Dots can connect to its ecosystem of over 4,000 apps, and they can be proactive — offering help with a project or handling a forgotten task — though with user approval. The Dots perform what OpenAI calls 'proactive research' in the background using connected apps in read-only mode, while users retain control over actions taken.

What's Missing: The Money Layer

Notably, OpenAI did not tease plans for a billing or revenue-sharing system comparable to the economic layer of traditional app stores. The company focused instead on building the discovery, distribution, and interface pieces to counter the app store model, along with an identity layer and a mechanism for sharing a user's existing ChatGPT AI allowance. OpenAI also discussed improvements to plugin review — its version of Apple's App Review process — letting developers track their review, see what needs fixing, request a human review, and update plugin tools without restarting the whole submission. Until a revenue model emerges, the disruption of the app store model remains incomplete. But the pieces are falling into place, and developers watching distribution channels should pay attention.

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT will suggest apps inside conversations and let users launch them directly, turning the chatbot into an app discovery surface.
  • Sign in with ChatGPT lets users bring their AI allowance into third-party apps, with 16 launch partners including Notion and Vercel.
  • An enterprise app marketplace launches with 30-plus partners, and eligible customers can apply their OpenAI commitment toward partner software.
  • Autonomous Dots agents can navigate the web and use over 4,000 connected apps, shifting users away from hunting for individual apps.
  • OpenAI did not announce a billing or revenue-sharing system, leaving the app store's economic layer unchallenged for now.
