India's biggest IPO is about to get a new name at the top. Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries, is looking to raise as much as $3.2 billion in a listing that would dwarf Hyundai Motor India's 2024 offering. The move comes as Jio transitions from a pure-play telecom operator into a broader digital services company — and as its rivalry with Elon Musk's Starlink heats up.

The Numbers Behind India's Largest-Ever Listing

Jio has set a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share for an offering of up to 270 million new shares. At the upper end, that values the company at roughly ₹10.3 trillion, or about $108.3 billion — a massive jump from its $65 billion valuation in 2020, when Meta and Google poured in $5.7 billion and $4.5 billion respectively. The IPO opens for subscription on October 21 and closes on October 23, with anchor bidding on October 19. Even at the lower end of the range, it would surpass Hyundai Motor India's ₹278.7 billion offering from 2024.

Why Debt Repayment Is the Priority

Of the proceeds, Jio plans to use up to ₹275 billion (about $2.9 billion) to repay debt at its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, with the rest going toward general corporate purposes. That's a telling signal: Jio built its dominance through aggressive infrastructure spending and cheap data plans, and now it's using public markets to clean up the balance sheet. The company reported revenue of ₹391.7 billion (about $4.1 billion) for the quarter ended June, up nearly 12% year-over-year, with net profit climbing 9% to ₹77.6 billion (around $816 million).

The Starlink Standoff and Jio's Next Act

Jio's IPO lands amid a public spat between Elon Musk and Mukesh Ambani. Musk has accused Ambani of trying to keep Starlink out of India, though Indian authorities have rejected those claims. More than a year ago, Jio and rival Airtel signed deals with SpaceX to distribute Starlink's satellite internet in India, subject to regulatory approvals. Meanwhile, Jio has moved well beyond telecom into broadband, cloud services, and other digital businesses. With over 524 million subscribers as of March 31, it remains India's largest operator — but the IPO is really a bet on what Jio becomes next.
